The community of New Caney, Texas, with a population of 19,987 in 2010, is located within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. It was originally settled in 1862 under the name Presswood, after pioneers Austin and Sarah Waters Presswood. The town grew as a hub for cattle ranching and milling and received a railway in 1877. In 1882, the town received its first post office and changed its name to New Caney, as the name Caney was already in use by another Texas town. The name Presswood fell out of use as New Caney became the preferred term for the area.
